Critic Reviews About The Legend of Tarzan
At least it’s watchable. In summer, baby, that’s high praise.
Committed performances aren’t enough to save this film from uncomfortable colonial optics, uninspiring CGI and tedious plotlines.
What makes it more enjoyable than a lot of recycled stories of this type is that the filmmakers have given Tarzan a thoughtful, imperfect makeover.
“The Legend of Tarzan,” for all its anticolonialist posturing and eminently attractive co-stars, has a dead soul.
Wall Street Journal
A talky and mostly turgid attempt by British director David Yates to build on the epic vision he brought to the final four Harry Potter movies via another beloved literary hero.
This loud, violent, action-packed adventure isn’t for young kids, and it’s not nearly as good as the recent update of The Jungle Book, either in terms of story or visual effects.
Common Sense Media
This CGI smorgasbord tells what Warner Bros. hopes is a bankable story, but it’s not a great one.
There’s a great Tarzan adventure somewhere in Legend of Tarzan, but the movie is too overstuffed and rough around the edges to fly high.
Not so much a ripping yarn, more of a dripping yarn, Yates’ reinterpretation of the Lord Of The Jungle is a big disappointment. It may be some time before Tarzan swings again.
“The Legend of Tarzan” has finally brought the hero back to movie screens…but it’s more cartoony than the 1999 animated Disney flick.
